How to switch from ProSelect
Written for photographers already running ProSelect, by people who’d rather you didn’t switch and regret it. What carries over, what you rebuild, and how to time it around your ProSelect billing.
ProSelect pricing and terms checked: 19 September 2026
ProSelect has been the in-person sales standard for more than twenty years. It is a serious piece of software, and there are studios that should not leave it. This page is for the ones that should.
Why photographers actually leave
Almost never the feature list. In the conversations we have, it comes down to three things.
1. The sale happens where the software is, and it ends without the money
ProSelect is a desktop application with no checkout, and those two facts compound. The sale can only happen where the install is — fine at your desk, awkward on a client’s sofa or an iPad, no use at all at 9pm on a Tuesday when they finally sit down with their partner to decide. And wherever it happens, it ends with an order you still have to invoice, chase and collect on, often days later, once the emotion of seeing their family on a wall has worn off.
Portrait Reveal is a link. It opens on the phone in their hand, shows their portrait on their own wall at true scale, and ends with the card charged through Stripe — Afterpay where eligible — and the digital files delivered automatically. We take no commission on what you sell.
2. The learning curve
This is the complaint that turns up most consistently in ProSelect’s own reviews. On Capterra it averages 3.9 out of 5, and the low scores are almost all about usability rather than capability: reviewers describe it as complicated to learn, not intuitive, slow to set up, and hard to train a new salesperson on. Even the five-star reviews warn you to plan on spending considerable time importing your products and pricing before you can sell anything with it.
Portrait Reveal has less to learn because there is less of it. Nothing to install or keep updated, no manual, and the part your client touches needs no explanation at all — they open a link. And the setup that ProSelect’s own reviewers warn you to budget time for is one we do for you, free, as part of onboarding: send us your price list and we load it.
3. The price and the six-month lock
ProSelect is US$29/month on Basic and US$49/month on Pro for a single user, both before tax, with a minimum six-month commitment. Portrait Reveal is US$14.99/month, all features, cancel whenever you like.
What carries over, and what you rebuild
Set expectations properly: there is no one-click import, because ProSelect’s price lists don’t export in a form anyone else can read. What there is instead is us doing it — send your price list over during onboarding and we set it up in your account for you. That is free, and it is not an upsell or a paid migration tier; it is just part of getting you started.
| In ProSelect | What happens | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Calibrated room and wall images | Don't transfer — and you don't rebuild them | Your client photographs their own wall on their phone, or picks one of five stock rooms. There's no calibration step to redo. |
| Price list | We load it for you, free | Send us your existing price list during onboarding and we set your products, sizes and prices up in your account for you, at no charge — you check it rather than type it. Frame width, style and colour are set per piece, and you can keep several lists (a seniors list, a family list) and pick one per gallery. |
| Collections and package templates | Rebuilt as Collections | Same idea: a fixed set of pieces at a set price, so the client is choosing between collections rather than talking themselves down to one 8×10. |
| Album designs | No equivalent | Portrait Reveal sells albums; it doesn't lay them out. This is the honest gap — keep ProSelect or a dedicated album tool if this matters. |
| Past orders and client records | Stay where they are | Nothing migrates. Keep your ProSelect records for your own history; new orders land in Portrait Reveal from your first session on it. |
| Your images | Uploaded per gallery | There's no bulk library to move across. You upload a session's images when you build its gallery. |
| Lab ordering | You keep doing it yourself | The order arrives with its specs and the payment already taken. Placing it with your lab is still your job — as is your existing lab relationship, pricing and turnaround. |
Time it around your ProSelect billing
This is the part people get wrong, and it costs them money. ProSelect subscriptions carry a minimum six-month obligation from the day you start. What you can do depends on where you are in it:
- Inside your first six months. You’re committed. Don’t try to cancel — run both, and move over when the obligation ends.
- Past six months, billed monthly. ProSelect allows pausing once per month after the initial commitment. Pausing rather than cancelling keeps your licence warm while you trial, so a switch that doesn’t suit you costs nothing to reverse.
- On a six-month or yearly plan. Pausing is once per period, and up to six months on the yearly plan. Check your renewal date before you commit to another term out of habit — that date is the cheapest moment to decide.
Terms are ProSelect’s and can change; confirm yours against your own account before you act on any of this.
The low-risk version: run both for one session
Don’t cancel anything. Present your next client in ProSelect exactly as you always do, then send them the Portrait Reveal link the same evening and let them sit with it. You’ll know from one client whether the wall preview and the checkout change what they order — and you’ll know it from your own books rather than from a comparison table.
Your first session on Portrait Reveal
- Start the trial. 14 days, no credit card. Nothing to install.
- Send us your price list. Free, and part of onboarding — we load your products, sizes and prices into your account so you start from your own catalogue rather than a blank one. Frame and canvas sizes are pre-loaded too, if you would rather set it up yourself.
- Recreate your packages as Collections. The tiers you already sell, so clients choose between collections instead of down to a single small print.
- Connect Stripe. This is the step that changes your cashflow. Ten minutes.
- Upload a session and build the gallery. Order the images the way you’d present them — the reveal slideshow runs in that order.
- Ask for a photo of their wall. One phone snapshot, before the session. It is the single thing that moves an order from a 16×20 to a collection.
- Send the link. Present it yourself, or let them open it at home. Both work; most photographers end up doing both.
Questions people ask before switching
Can I import my ProSelect price list?
Not automatically — ProSelect's price lists don't export in a form anyone else can read, so there's no one-click import. Send us your price list instead and we'll set your products, sizes and prices up in your account for you. That is free and part of onboarding, not a paid migration service. If you'd rather do it yourself, frame and canvas sizes come pre-loaded, so you're adjusting prices rather than typing a catalogue from scratch.
Does Portrait Reveal design albums?
No. If album design is a real part of what you sell, keep ProSelect or a dedicated album tool for that side of the business. Portrait Reveal sells albums as a product — a client can order one — but it won't lay out the spreads.
Can I cancel ProSelect straight away?
Only if you're past your initial commitment. ProSelect subscriptions carry a minimum six-month obligation from the date you start, and pausing is allowed once per month after those first six months. Check your own billing date before you cancel anything — and see the timing section above, because you don't need to cancel to trial us.
Do I have to install anything?
No. Portrait Reveal runs in a browser — your laptop, an iPad on the sofa, or the client's own phone. There's nothing to download, nothing to keep updated, and nothing that breaks the week a new macOS ships.
Do my clients need an app or an account?
No. They get a private link. It opens on whatever they're holding.
Can I still sell digital files?
Yes, and they're delivered automatically. When a client pays, the download link is provisioned and emailed without you touching it — which is the step most photographers are doing by hand after a ProSelect session.
Does it order from my lab?
No. Portrait Reveal takes the sale and gives you the order, the specs and the money — you place the lab order yourself, exactly as you do now. ProSelect has lab ordering integrations and we don't, so if that pipeline is what you value most, that's a genuine reason to stay.
What if I switch and it doesn't work for my clients?
Run both for one session before you commit to anything — there's a section on exactly how above. The trial is 14 days with no credit card, and there's no minimum term afterwards, so the worst case is you've sent us a price list and watched one client use it.
