ProSelect alternative: Portrait Reveal vs ProSelect

Most portrait photographers aren’t running a full studio with a dedicated sales room anymore. They shoot on location, work from home, and sell over a video call or on a client’s sofa. That’s the photographer we built Portrait Reveal for, and it’s why the comparison below is less about feature counts than about where the sale can happen and what it costs you to keep the software.

We make Portrait Reveal, so read this with that in mind. We have tried to state ProSelect’s prices and terms exactly as published, say plainly where it still wins, and date-stamp everything so you can check it. If you already know you want to move, skip to how to switch from ProSelect.

Why photographers look for a ProSelect alternative

Rarely because ProSelect can’t do the job. It has been the in-person sales standard for more than twenty years and it is a serious piece of software. The reasons people start searching are practical:

  • The price and the lock-in. ProSelect is US$29 a month on Basic and US$49 on Pro, per user, before tax, with a minimum six-month commitment. For a photographer who runs a handful of sales sessions a month, that is a lot of fixed cost for one job.
  • It only runs where it is installed. A Mac or Windows application suits a sales room. It suits a client’s sofa, an iPad or a borrowed laptop much less.
  • The sale ends without the money. ProSelect has no native checkout, so a great session still ends with an order you invoice and chase days later.
  • The learning curve. Usability is the complaint that comes up most in ProSelect’s reviews, from slow setup to being hard to train someone new on.

If one of those is you, an alternative is worth a trial. If none of them are, ProSelect may well still be the right tool.

The two differences that actually matter

Not feature-list differences. Differences that change what you pay and what a client can do at 9pm on a Tuesday.

01

A browser goes places a desktop install can’t

ProSelect is a Mac or Windows application. That’s fine at your desk. It’s awkward on a client’s sofa, on an iPad, or on a laptop that isn’t yours.

Portrait Reveal is a link. Your client opens it on the phone in their hand, on their own wall, wherever they are.

02

The sale can close without you in the room

ProSelect is built around a sales appointment you run. Portrait Reveal is built so the client can see their wall, choose a collection and pay through Stripe — including Afterpay where eligible — in one sitting.

No invoice three days later, when the emotion has worn off. We take no commission on what you sell.

What that costs over a year

Portrait Reveal is US$14.99 a month — roughly US$180 a year. ProSelect is US$29 a month on Basic and US$49 a month on Pro, per user, and both figures exclude tax. On top of that, a ProSelect subscription commits you to a minimum of six months before you can stop.

 MonthlyMinimum commitment12 months
Portrait RevealUS$14.99NoneUS$179.88
ProSelect BasicUS$296 months (US$174)US$348
ProSelect ProUS$496 months (US$294)US$588

ProSelect figures are per user and exclude tax, and are multiplied out from the monthly prices above. Portrait Reveal has one plan with every feature and takes no commission on what you sell.

Running an in-person sales session without ProSelect

The usual worry about leaving ProSelect is the session itself. Portrait Reveal is built for it as well as for selling remotely, and the in-person workflow will feel familiar:

  1. Ask for a photo of their wall. One phone snapshot before the session. If they do not send one, stock wall photos are available.
  2. Cull the gallery together. Sort images into Yes, Maybe and No with the keyboard so the session stays quick.
  3. Show the wall art on a second screen. The client sees their portraits at true scale on their own wall while you design the collection on your screen.
  4. Let them take it home. The same gallery goes out as a password-protected private link, so a partner who was not in the room can look again and the client can pay when they are ready.

The category has a name, IPS, and a few other tools in it. For how they differ and how to choose between desktop and browser-based software, see our guide to IPS (in-person sales) software, or read about running the same session over a video call or holding it without a studio.

What you give up, and who should stay on ProSelect

A ProSelect alternative is only an alternative if it covers what you actually use. Be honest with yourself about this list before you move:

  • Album design. Portrait Reveal sells albums as a product but does not lay out the spreads. If album design is a real part of your business, keep ProSelect or a dedicated album tool for that.
  • Lab ordering integrations. ProSelect can pass orders to labs. Portrait Reveal takes the sale and gives you the order, the specs and the money, and you place the lab order yourself.
  • Studio production workflow. If your studio runs on ProSelect end to end, replacing one piece of it may cost more than it saves.

Stay on ProSelect if you design albums in it daily, depend on its lab integrations, or have a dedicated sales room and a team trained on it. Try Portrait Reveal if you mainly want to show wall art, sell on location or at home, take payment at the end of the session and stop paying for a six-month minimum. Plenty of photographers sensibly do both for a while, and our switching guide covers how to run the two side by side and time the change around your ProSelect billing.

Other ProSelect alternatives worth comparing

If wall art is only part of what you need, these are the other tools photographers weigh against us. Each comparison says where the other tool wins.

  • Portrait Reveal vs N-Vu — Same in-person sales tools, same wall art visualisation — but N-Vu's affordable plans take a commission and its commission-free plan isn't affordable.
  • Portrait Reveal vs ShootProof — Both take payment and deliver digital downloads. ShootProof has no tool for showing a client their portrait on their own wall — and its price climbs with every photo you store.
  • Portrait Reveal vs Pic-Time — Pic-Time is a strong gallery and print store, but clients can't see the piece on their own wall. Its cheaper plans also keep 15% of your markup.
  • Portrait Reveal vs Pixieset — Pixieset previews wall art in a sample room. Portrait Reveal shows it on the client's own wall, at true size, for one flat price.

ProSelect alternative: common questions

What is the best ProSelect alternative?

It depends on what you use ProSelect for. If it is wall art and in-person sales, Portrait Reveal does that from a browser for US$14.99 a month. If you mostly design albums, you need a dedicated album tool. If you want an online gallery first and wall art second, the Pic-Time, Pixieset, ShootProof and N-Vu comparisons on this site cover where each of those wins and where it falls short.

Is Portrait Reveal a full ProSelect replacement?

For wall art sales, yes. For album design and studio production workflow, no. ProSelect does those and we don't. Most portrait photographers we talk to only use ProSelect for the wall art side.

How much does ProSelect actually cost?

ProSelect is subscription-only: Basic is US$29/month and Pro is US$49/month, per user, both excluding tax, with a minimum six-month commitment. Check prostudiosoftware.com for current pricing.

Is there a free ProSelect alternative?

Portrait Reveal has a 14-day free trial with no credit card, then US$14.99/month. There is no permanent free plan. ProSelect also offers a free trial, so you can compare the two on a real session before paying for either.

Is there a browser-based or iPad version of ProSelect?

ProSelect is a desktop application for Mac and Windows. Portrait Reveal runs in any browser, so it works on a laptop, an iPad on the client's sofa, or the client's own phone, with nothing to install.

Can I run an in-person sales session with Portrait Reveal?

Yes. Cull the gallery into Yes, Maybe and No with the keyboard, show the wall art options on a second screen, and design the collection together on your own screen. The same gallery can then go home as a password-protected private link so the client can look again later.

Can I try Portrait Reveal without cancelling ProSelect?

Yes. There is nothing to install and nothing to migrate. Keep ProSelect running, present your next client as usual, then send them the Portrait Reveal link the same evening and see what they order. Our switching guide covers the timing around ProSelect's six-month minimum.

Does Portrait Reveal work on a Mac?

It works on anything with a browser: Mac, Windows, iPad, phone. There is no application to install.

What about my existing frames and pricing?

You set your own products and prices. Frame and canvas sizes come pre-loaded so you can start immediately, and you adjust from there. If you would rather not build it yourself, send us your price list and we will load it for you, free.
